Questions With Candace Nelson of Sprinkles

We’re thrilled to feature Candace Nelson, founder of Sprinkles, on our blog to ask her a few questions about her new location.  The grand opening party of Sprinkles at Legacy West is on May 31st – just a few weeks away.  Sprinkles at Legacy West will feature cupcakes, cookies, ice cream and a 24/7 Cupcake ATM.  And, they are even creating a special Legacy West cupcake for the grand opening.

Why did you decide to open your new Sprinkles store at Legacy West?

Candace: Our Dallas location was our third bakery and first to cross California state lines.  Since 2007, it has remained one of our best bakeries and we have received so many inquiries from people in Plano asking for a shop closer by!  We had been looking for the perfect Plano location for years and when the Legacy West opportunity arose, we knew it was right.  We would be in great company with amazing co-tenants and the center they are building is truly one-of-a-kind.

Do you have a most popular cupcake flavor?

Candace: Red Velvet is by far our most popular flavor – it outsells all our other flavors combined!

The cupcake ATM has become such a huge hit. We are so excited to have one at Legacy West! Where did this idea come from?

Candace: I conceived the idea of an automatic cupcake machine after having late-night sugar cravings while pregnant with my second son.  Even as Sprinkles’ founder, I couldn’t get my midnight cupcake fix!  I thought ‘there has to be a way’ and so the concept of the Sprinkles Cupcake ATM was born!

The frosting was inspired by the color of Legacy West’s starburst logo!

Ok— now, for the tough question. What is your favorite and least favorite cupcake flavor?

Candace: My favorite is Dark Chocolate.  It is so decadent and rich and the sprinkles we use are made of real chocolate that melt in your mouth.  Least favorite?  I’ve never met a cupcake I didn’t like.  Well, maybe this mayonnaise cupcake a “Cupcake Wars” contestant once made on the show!

Tell us about the special Legacy West cupcake you created and the inspiration for the flavors you selected.

Candace: We wanted to celebrate our opening as well as Legacy West’s grand opening with something no one else in the country could get!  Legacy West Chocolate Caramel takes my favorite cake as the base, rich chocolate cake, and matches it with buttery golden caramel frosting.  The frosting was inspired by the color of Legacy West’s starburst logo!

What’s the most exciting aspect of your job and the most rewarding?

Candace: New store openings are the most exciting part of my job!  It is always a little scary to open in a new market, but opening day never ceases to be exhilarating.  The most rewarding part of my job is seeing memories made inside our store.  I have seen so many special moments, from proposals to gender reveals with cupcakes.  Yet, even some of the simplest moments, like a mom with her daughter sharing a cupcake, are truly special.
